There’s No Such Thing as Not Choosing.
This time of year, we spend a lot of energy on manifesting, creating new habits, up-leveling, “designing your life”, etc. What we are talking about is really just a choice. Couch it in any language you would like, but the meat of the way our life plays out lies at the intersection of our decisions and the reality around us. In every moment, we decide whether we will be consciously involved in the co-creation of our lives or if we will let ourselves be pulled to and fro by the currents around (and within) us. We choose to either act or not act. We choose to make a decision, or we choose to let the decisions be made for us.
There is magic in understanding and accepting this truth. The awareness and opportunity it can cultivate in life are immeasurable.
In fact, it feels almost supernatural in how powerfully it can alter your everyday reality and your future trajectory.
But it is not ”woo-woo”.
This quote by Jean-Paul Sartre has been rolling around in my mind over these last few weeks and it nicely sums up the idea:
“I can always choose, but I ought to know that if I do not choose, I am still choosing.”
We can decide to let life happen to us, to move from our unconscious, habitual reactivity and ingrained patterns at the mercy of the forces of the world around us.
Or, we can take a proactive, conscious role in our destiny.
There is skill involved, of course, both in the selection and in the execution of our actions.
But we can, with mindful practice, become masterful… especially in the two key steps of (re)creating our lives: Vision and Action.
(More on those steps in the next blog!)
As the dust settles from the activities of 2022 and we begin to contemplate what 2023 has in store, consider this important question…
What are you choosing (or not choosing) for yourself?
May your New Year be blessed, and may all of our collective thoughts, words, and actions bring peace.
